SALES TAX HOLIDAY ON ENERGY STAR APPLIANCES

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 6 through SUNDAY NOVEMBER 8, 2009

Appliance stores hope the state's second annual sales tax holiday on Energy Star appliances this weekend will help stimulate business.

To increase the chances of that happening, many retailers are extending hours and offering additional discounts on top of the tax savings to try to entice shoppers to buy.

The tax holiday,  works much like the school supplies sales tax holiday North Carolina holds each August, except that now it's Energy Star-rated appliances that are exempt from the tax.

In Catawba County, where the combined sales tax rate is 8 percent, a consumer would save $40 in taxes on a $500 appliance.

Savings are likely to be greater than that, as appliance dealers hold promotions and sales in conjunction with the sales tax holiday.

Lowe's Home Improvement stores are among major retailers in North Carolina offering discounts on appliances this weekend.

Items included in the tax holiday are products that meet the Energy Star requirements and are authorized to carry the Energy Star label, including clothes washers, freezers, refrigerators, central air conditioners, room air conditioners, air source heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps, ceiling fans, dehumidifiers and programmable thermostats.

While dishwashers are not included, some dealers will discount Energy Star-rated models this weekend.
There is no price limit or ceiling for products to qualify.

Items purchased for use in a business do not qualify for tax exemption.

Energy Star-qualified products use up to 50 percent less energy than older models or less-efficient counterparts currently on the market.

Join in on the last of our three-park celebration commemorating the Catawba County Parks Division 10-year anniversary by coming out to Bakers Mountain Park for an evening of family fun and stargazing!

3pm - History Hike lead by Ranger John Sutton. 

You will learn about both the geological history of the mountain as well as historical information on folks who called the mountain home and used its resources in the earlier part of the last century.

This will be a moderate hike lasting about one and one half hours. Please wear comfortable shoes.

6pm - Ranger John Sutton will then head for the top of the mountain for a Night Hike in the forest.

You will just make it to the observation platform in time to see the sunset and prepare yourself for a breathtaking view of the surrounding valley.

The best part is that the Catawba Valley Astronomy Club will be there with a telescope set up at the top for an even better view of the crisp, October sky!

You will then make our way back down the road in the darkness to listen for owls and look for any critters that may be moving about.

Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a flashlight!

7 pm - Rangers Frank Porch and Tabitha Hope will entertain us with ghost stories around the campfire.

They will spin tales of spooky happenings that are sure to keep you on the edge of your seats and make chills run down your spine while we make s'mores by the fire.

If the tales are too spooky you can head over to the telescopes that will be set up near the office to gaze at the heavens and learn more about the night sky from volunteers from the Catawba Valley Astronomy Club!

Bring a chair and a flashlight.

Taylorsville NC Apple Festival

October 17, 2009 from 9:00am - 5:00pm

The streets of Taylorsville fill to overflowing for the Annual Taylorsville Apple Festival which draws an estimated 30,000 attendees and hosts over 250 exhibit booths. The festival provides a fantastic assortment of entertainment, food and vendors.

The festival boasts 3 entertainment stages: The Main Stage on the courthouse lawn, the Gospel Stage at the west end of the festival, and the Children's Stage on the east end of the festival. The Kid's Korner is the biggest draw for our younger attendees.

The Kid's Korner has hosted in the past, pony rides, mechanical bucking bull rides, pitching booths, numerous professional inflatables, puppet shows, music and much more.

Food vendors surround the courthouse emitting some of the most wonderful smells and best tasting food you'll find in the Carolinas. One can find, chopped barbeque, eggrolls, hamburgers and hotdogs, barbeque chicken, Italian sausages, and the list goes on.

Sunday features the "Bag of Books Sale" from 2:00 - 4:30 p.m. Fill a grocery bag (bags provided) with books for just $3.00.

The books offered for sale have been removed from the library's shelves or donated by area residents. Prices are: hard covers $1.00 or $2.00 depending on condition, paperbacks $.50, and children's books $.50 to $2.00.

A selection of special books may be offered at a slightly higher price. Some encyclopedias, National Geographic magazines, books on tape, cassettes and videos will also be available.
