The City of Hickory received a national award for its Operation No Vacancy program during the Alliance for Innovation conference on Transforming Local Government in Corpus Christi, Texas last week.

The Alliance for Innovation is an international organization that highlights innovative programs and best practices from every aspect of local government. Alliance for Innovation emphasizes the importance of working across department and agency lines to develop new processes that improve the performance and efficiency of local government.

Operation No Vacancy  received an "Outstanding Achievement in Local Government Innovation" award.

 Hickory was also chosen to present the Operation No Vacancy program during the national conference. More than 90 governments applied to present case studies, and Hickory was one of 23 governments chosen to share a cutting edge and successful program.   

Operation No Vacancy is a new initiative in Hickory that aims to attract reinvestment in distressed commercial and industrial corridors. The initiative began after staff conducted a comprehensive inventory of vacant buildings in the city.

Commercial Revitalization Area, which contains the areas that have the highest concentration of vacant buildings and need for reinvestment. The Vacant Buildings Inventory contains a current list of available properties in the distressed commercial and industrial corridors.

Operation No Vacancy has unified existing grant programs in Hickory such as the Downtown Appearance Grant and created new incentive programs that are targeted to the areas of greatest need. The newly created Vacant Building Revitalization grant offers 50 percent matching funding of up to $25,000 to people who redevelop a vacant or under-utilized building.

The Millholland Planetarium uses an AVI SkyLase full-dome laser system, enabling CSC to offer dynamic laser light shows, bringing you modern pop, alternative, holiday and classic rock presentations like you've never experienced before.

SkyLase has three lasers, each with a pure, solid core made of elements like lithium or garnet. Electricity is pumped through the element, exciting electrons in the atoms and producing light of a single wavelength, creating sharp red, blue and green colors that can be mixed to make every color of the rainbow.

The money you raise supports programs in your community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. And it funds research to find answers to the serious problems that threaten our babies. We've been walking since 1970 and have raised an incredible $1.8 billion to benefit all babies.  

The March of Dimes uses 77 cents of every dollar you raise in March for Babies to support research and programs that help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives. And your funds are used to bring comfort and information to families whose baby was born too soon, or sick.
