DOWNTOWN HICKORY ART CRAWL

THRUSDAY JUNE 18, 2009 from 5:30 - 8:30

Art Crawls return to downtown Hickory in 2009. Regional artists are hosted by downtown retail businesses to share their artistic talents while displaying their merchandise.

On Thursday, June 18, from 5:30pm-9:00pm, come crawl around downtown to see the fine art of local artists. Downtown stores are open with a fabulous selection of merchandise ranging from apparel and accessories to zany gift items.

A map of participating businesses will be distributed during the Kick-Off Party. Full Circle Arts will host the party in their gallery located at 266 First Avenue NW. Full Circle Arts is a collective of artists with examples of fine art and sculpture that surpasses most in the Unifour area. The Kick-Off Party will be held from 5:00-5:30pm on Art Crawl Thursday.

Catawba County Animal Services will continue a series of Rabies Vaccination Clinics for 2009

All clinics will be held on Saturdays. The Catawba County Animal Shelter is also now providing one year rabies vaccinations to pet owners year round, by appointment.

"North Carolina law states that, in all counties where a campaign of vaccination such as our clinics is being conducted, it is the duty of the owner of every dog and cat over four months of age to have them vaccinated for rabies. Pet owners face a $50 fine if they do not have pets vaccinated. Tags showing proof of the vaccination of dogs must be placed on the dog's collar. Cat owners must be able to show proof of a current vaccination."

It is extremely important that pet owners across Catawba County take advantage of these clinics:

Rabies is a very dangerous disease that infects only mammals and is spread by infected animals through bites, saliva or cerebral spinal fluid. While it is mainly carried by wild animals, any pets that aren't vaccinated are at great risk if they come in contact with an infected animal. Rabies is a virus which attacks the central nervous system and, if left untreated, it is always fatal.

All pets brought to these clinics will receive a one-year rabies vaccination.

Here is the schedule for the clinics, all on Saturdays and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. except where noted:

June 13- Riverbend Dog Park, at Riverbend Park off Highway 16 at the Catawba-Alexander County line

July 11- American Legion Fairgrounds, off Highway 70 between Hickory and Conover

August 8- Catawba Fire Department, 108 North Main Street, Catawba

Catawba County is working to receive a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) from the North Carolina Department of Commerce that will provide money for water and/or sewer taps and connections for low-to-moderate income households in Catawba County.

To be eligible for this grant, a house must be owned and lived in by low-to-moderate income owners, or by low-to-moderate income tenants where the landlord also has low-to-moderate income.

Low and moderate-income households are defined as households with 80% or less of the median family gross income for the county or the Metropolitan Statistical Area in which the house is located.

The income limits needed to qualify in 2009 are as follows:

HOUSEHOLDS:

1 Person  > $29,400

2 Persons > $33,600

3 Persons > $37,800

4 Persons > $42,000 

5 Persons > $45,350

6 Persons > $48,700

7 Persons > $52,100

8 Persons > $55,450

Water and/or sewer lines that were constructed in the past using CDBG funds are not eligible for connection under this grant. A water and/or sewer line must be previously constructed, in service, and bordering the property being qualified. The water and/or sewer line may be within the limits of a city or town within Catawba County or elsewhere in the county.

CDBG requires that households be identified through an application process prior to applying for this grant. Catawba County is accepting applications for this service beginning immediately and through June 25, 2009.

The seemingly endless rainfall and resident dilligence with the water restrictions has finally lifted the almost two year drought in the Catawba Valley.

The Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group (CW-DMAG), which includes Hickory, announced that steady improvement of groundwater and streamflow conditions moved the Catawba River Basin's drought conditions to normal, which means that all water restrictions are lifted. 

Hickory, along with the CW-DMAG will continue to monitor the Catawba River Basin to see if the basin continues in normal conditions or falls back into a drought as summer arrives, which is highly dependent upon future rainfall patterns. The 2007-2009 drought was the worst ever recorded in the Catawba River Basin.

 Voluntary Agricultural District Poster Contest

Sponsored by:  Catawba County Voluntary Agricultural Advisory Board

The purpose of this contest is to have youth create a poster that will inspire the design for a highway road sign. The signs will be placed throughout Catawba County's rural areas conveying the message that farming is located in that specific community.

Specifics for the poster design are:

* Poster should be the original work of the youth, any type of art medium may be used

* Participant age 9-16

* Limit one entry per person

* Clip art may be used but copyrighted material may not be used

* Background for the poster will be either green or brown

* Poster size should be at least 11x14

* Poster will have the words "Voluntary Agricultural District"

* Poster should be a simple design with limited colors used, and should be visible from a car while driving down the road. Incorporation of the County Seal is encouraged.
