The City of Hickory has a new look as part of its ongoing wayfinding project.

What is Wayfinding ?

Catawba County prepares for Back to School - National Immunization Awareness Month

Catawba County Public Health is celebrating National Immunization Awareness Month by encouraging parents to check their family's immunization records to see if they are up-to-date and if they are missing any vaccinations.

Immunizations play a vital role in protecting children who are entering school from preventable diseases. However, many children are not fully protected because their vaccines are not up-to-date.

Children entering Kindergarten must be up-to-date with the following immunizations:

4 Diphtheria,

Tetanus and Pertussis (DTaP),

4 Polio,

2 Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR),

3 Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib),

3 Hepatitis B,

1 Varicella

Children entering 6th grade are required to have:

Tdap booster (if they have not had one in the past 5 years)

The state of North Carolina requires that students have an up-to-date immunization record on file at their school. If the up-to-date immunization record is not received by the school during the first 30 days of the school year, the child may not be allowed to return to school until they submit their immunization record.

The time is right to purchase your dream home. And now with the help of a major housing stimulus bill, it's an even better time to buy in the Hickory North Carolina area.

On February 17th, 2009, the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act 2009 was passed, which includes a new, temporary tax credit as an incentive for first-time homebuyers. With this bill, first-time homebuyers may qualify for up to $8,000 in a tax credit for the purchase of a primary residence.

What is the First-Time Homebuyer Tax Credit?

A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in what the taxpayer owes in income taxes. To qualify for the tax credit, a home purchase must occur on or after Jan 1, 2009 (the purchase date is the date when closing occurs) and before December 1, 2009. The taxpayer must meet the annual income requirements.

The tax credit is equal to 10% of the qualified home purchase price, but the credit amount is capped at $8,000.

A "first-time homebuyer" is defined as a buyer who has not owned a principal residence during the three-year period prior to the purchase. First-time homebuyers purchasing any kind of home-new or resale-may be eligible for the tax credit.

There are income limits to consider. For single taxpayers, the limit is $75,000; and for married taxpayers filing a joint return, the limit is $150,000. The tax credit amount is reduced for buyers with a modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) of more than $75,000 for single taxpayers and $150,000 for married taxpayers filing a joint return.

Does the tax credit need to be repaid?

No. Homebuyers will not be required to repay the credit, as long as the purchase is made between January 1, 2009 and December 1, 2009.

Are there ‘other' allowances available?

Yes. For some FHA-insured mortgages, the tax credit may be used as a down payment or to offset closing costs. To learn more about this incentive as well as others that may be available in North Carolina.

Catawba County Schools is embracing free networking communities in an effort to increase and improve the communications of the district in 2009-2010

 New Web 2.0 tools being utilized by Catawba County Schools this year include a Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr.

Catawba County Schools has a created a Facebook Fan Page. Facebook is one of the most popular online social networks in the world, a virtual geographical link between friends, family, businesses, government and more.  News posts and notifications are now being updated regularly on the CCS Facebook fan page.

Catawba County Schools is also using Twitter, one of the newest and fastest growing social networking sites.  Catawba County Schools will use this service to share "good news" briefs and send notifications such as school closings and other items of community interest. Follow the district "tweets" at twitter.com/catawbaschools.

YouTube, a video sharing site where users may upload and share videos, will be used for posting district video messages as well as for student instruction.   

Flickr, a photo management and sharing application, will be another new tool available for staff and student instructional use.
