Want to learn how to create an attractive and healthy yard by working with our North Carolina environment rather than against it?

If so, the City of Hickory encourages citizens to attend the Carolina Yards and Neighborhoods program in March.

North Carolina Cooperative Extension has developed a program called Carolina Yards and Neighborhoods to show citizens how to create a healthy yard by working with nature rather than against it.

Enroll in the Carolina Yards and Neighborhoods workshop and learn about:

* putting the right plant in the right place

* how to water efficiently

* using mulch

* fertilizing appropriately

* managing yard pests

* reducing storm water runoff by managing it where it falls

Kelly Groves, Environment & Natural Resources Agent, North Carolina Cooperative Extension, Catawba County will teach the Carolina Yards and Neighborhoods Workshop.

The workshop consists of two sessions that will be taught at the Patrick Beaver Library, 375 3^rd Street, NE, on the SALT block in Hickory, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on March 11 and 18. Attendance is required at both sessions to complete the workshop. There is no cost for the two-session workshop.

Catawba Science Center - Science After Dark Presents "Laser U2"

Celebrate St. Patty's Day at Catawba Science Center (CSC) in Hickory with U2, laser lights and beer.

CSC will present Laser U2 on Friday, March 19 as part of its adult program series, Science After Dark.

Experience the music of U2 set to mesmerizing laser lights projected on the planetarium dome. Song list includes classics like: "Sunday, Bloody Sunday," "Where the Streets Have No Name," "Desire" and "Beautiful Day."

Laser shows are at 7, 8:30 & 10 p.m. Show running time is 50 minutes.

Admission is $5 for CSC members, $8 for nonmembers.

Hickory NC is trying to Woo Google

Communities join forces to "woo" Google - Government, academic, business and community leaders met Monday, March 1 to join forces in the Google Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Business initiative.

The Hickory/Lenoir Google Fiber to the Home and Business Request for Information (RFI) application is a collective effort with support from municipalities and counties along the U.S. 321 data center corridor in Catawba and Caldwell Counties.

The intent of the Google project is to eliminate the bandwidth bottleneck so that Google can develop and test high speed network applications, and Google will open their network to any and all service providers who want access to a large bandwidth "pipe" to businesses and households.

The high test speed is a gigabit per second connection, which is more than 100 times faster than the current connection available in the area. The communities are confident that if Hickory/Lenoir is awarded as a test site for the ultra-fast network, the community would see significant economic growth, as it will open doors and be an attraction for local business to stay, and recruit more industries, creating more opportunity for all citizens and local governments.

Learn about bluebird conservation and tips for attracting these beautiful, beneficial birds to your backyard during Bring Back the Bluebird on March 13 at Catawba Science Center (CSC) in Hickory.

The day's program includes a bluebird house building workshop for families, 12 to 1:45 p.m. in the Inventor's Workshop.

Teams of one adult and up to two children (ages 6+) can make their own bluebird house. Cost is $20/ CSC member teams and $30/ nonmember teams. Registration fee includes one bluebird house kit. Additional kits are $15 each and can be ordered at the time of program registration.

Buying your first home is a big step in your life. I know, I was once a first time home buyer myself. If I only knew then what I know now, how many times have you heard people use that expression.

Qualifications for the First Time Buyer Tax Credit:

$8000 will be the maximum credit for any new home buyer.

A new home buyer is a purchaser who has not owned a principal residence in the past 3 years. The purchaser's spouse will also have to meet this qualification.

The income levels have also been increased. Single buyers must make less than $125,000 annually and married buyers must make less than $225,000 annually to qualify for the total credit. There is also a $20,000 window, for buyers to receive some credit if they make more than the allowed levels. But no credit is given to single buyers who make more than $145,000, and married buyers who make more than $245,000.

As long as you keep the property for at least 3 years, you will not have to repay this credit. However, if you sell the property the total credit will have to be repaid.

Qualifications for the Current Homeowner Tax Credit:

You must have lived in your current property for at least 5 of the last 8 years to qualify for the credit of $6500.

The above income limits also apply. ($125,000 for single, $225,000 for married, $20,000 phase out).

Must purchase your new home between November 7, 2009 and April 30, 2010. You may also close the property before July 1, 2010 if it is under contract on or before April 30, 2010 deadline.

What properties will qualify?

These credits are for the purchase of a primary residence. Condos, town homes, single family, new construction and re-sale homes all qualify.

The property must be purchased for less than $800,000.
